A multi-centre, randomised controlled study of early insulin replacement in very low birth weight infants (VLBW <1500g). 500 children will be randomised to receive either a continuous infusion of insulin (0.05 u/kg/hr) from within 24 hours of birth and for the first 7 days, or to act as controls and receive standard neonatal care.
Inclusion Criteria
- birth weight < 1500g
- Requiring intensive care and in whom it is considered appropriate to continue intensive care
- Less than 24 hours of age at recruitment
- Parents must have given written informed consent
Patient Exclusions
- Any life threatening congenital abnormality
- Maternal diabetes, including gestational diabetes
- Babies where the appropriateness of continuing intensive care is being discussed
